Hong Kong City Hall, Central | Nostalgia in Tune
Description
Nostalgia in Tune, meaning “melodies that carry our longing,” brings homesickness across thousands of miles. Presented by the Huaqiao University Education Foundation (Hong Kong) Limited, this concert adopts Nostalgia in Tune as its theme. It brings together distinguished musicians from Hong Kong and Mainland China, presenting a repertoire that blends Eastern and Western works. Through music, the performance conveys overseas Chinese people’s profound affection for their homeland while raising funds for scholarship programmes supporting overseas Chinese students. Tickets are available to the public. All music lovers and overseas Chinese compatriots are warmly invited to the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall for this musical feast imbued with feelings for our homeland.
This concert originates from the enduring philanthropic vision of successive presidents of the Huaqiao University Hong Kong Alumni Association and numerous overseas Chinese compatriots. For generations, overseas Chinese residents in Hong Kong have cherished their roots despite being far from home. For decades, they have established foundations and made consistent donations to support overseas Chinese students at the university in completing their studies. This Nostalgia in Tune concert uses music as its medium, inviting music enthusiasts and overseas Chinese communities from all backgrounds to support educational development and nurture young overseas Chinese students, regardless of alumni status. Every ticket purchase represents a show of support, allowing care that spans mountains and seas to continue through musical notes.
The concert boasts an outstanding line-up of artists. Steinway Artist Dr Cheng Wai serves as the featured pianist, collaborating with violinist Cindy Chan in multiple Chinese and Western chamber works. Yang Xiting, Associate Dean of the School of Music and Dance at Huaqiao University, joins Dr Cheng Wai for piano duo performances. Erhu virtuoso Aaron Ko, violinist Gao Can, and vocalists Feng Guodong and Liu Yifei will also grace the stage. Eastern and Western instruments converge and interact, unfolding a rich and diverse musical narrative for the audience.
The repertoire is carefully curated to resonate with the theme Nostalgia in Tune. Among the Chinese works, Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake paints a serene moonlit scene of the Jiangnan region on the piano. Fisher Girl by the Seaside brims with the lively atmosphere of coastal communities. The centerpiece, Brewing Tea by Moonlight, the theme song of Letter to Mum, delivers poetic Chinese sentiment through graceful melodies. Timeless classics such as Jasmine Flower and Inch of Heart are deeply embedded in Chinese collective memory. Their opening notes awaken tender memories of hometowns and loved ones.
Cross-cultural and Western-influenced selections include Sunshine over Tashkurgan, vibrant with the exotic charm of Xinjiang, and the universally beloved Castle in the Sky. Alternating Chinese and global works mirror the life journey of overseas Chinese people navigating diverse cultures while preserving cherished memories of home deep in their hearts.
Music transcends borders, and feelings of home resonate universally. Wherever we may be, music connects hearts. On this evening, the artists will weave longing for distant homelands and gratitude into every note through their fingertips and voices. We sincerely invite music lovers and overseas Chinese compatriots to the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall to experience this cross-ocean sentiment through melodies and support the overseas Chinese student scholarship programme through music.
